Grandmaster, I truly appreciate your wisdom, and I am NEVER disappointed when I read your remarks or articles regarding training. My very first tournament, in 2007, I had only been a student for a few months. I had no idea what to expect, or why I should care about attending. Now, as someone who has both won and lost in the years since my first tournament, I appreciate the value of getting together and seeing others perform the same forms I am studying and working on. It gives me insight into my own training, and helps me visualize what 'works' and what doesn't. In the first year of my training, I didn't understand what it meant to my instructors and to Sifu for me to attend our annual tournament; now, I know that it is about demonstrating my belief in the training I've received, and about showing my martial spirit by competing with the proper attitude and respect for my fellow WD students. Last year, during a particularly LONG round of Push Hands, Sifu Stanley was called over to give his opinion regarding the circumstances. He stated that when he was promoted to Sifu, his mom went around telling everyone how proud she was of him, now that he was the 'big cheese'. When he learned of what she was doing, he told her that he wasn't the 'big' cheese, but the 'medium' cheese: there would always be someone better and someone who was still learning. I was so impressed, that it changed my view of tournament. Tournament is our opportunity to grow and learn as martial artists; if scientists and investors can see the value in trying things over and over until they get it right, then so can I. I look forward to seeing you all there!!
