Lion Dancing is an important tradition in Chinese culture and has a strong connection with Southern Kung Fu. Choy Li Fut practitioners have been using Lion Dance as an important training method for generations. For today's kung fu student, lion dance offers a vigorous workout that builds strength, stamina, and balance. It also provides a rich source of historical and cultural knowledge about Chinese Martial Arts that has been passed down from teacher to student for hundreds of years.
“Kung Fu without Lion Dancing is like a flower without petals.”Grandmaster Doc Fai Wong
The consistent study of kung fu plays an essential role in a lively and powerful lion dance performance. The low kung fu stances are needed to develop a strong base. This is especially true for the tail of the lion who often supports the weight of their partner to perform stacks and other acrobatic moves. The lion head, which can weigh up to ten pounds, helps to build strength as well as crisp, clean upper body movement.
The White Dragon Lion Dance team is one of the oldest and largest Lion Dance groups in San Diego County. We practice Fo-Shan style lion dance, which is known for its expressive movement, dynamic footwork, and energetic drumming.
The team specializes in weddings and business grand openings. We also enjoy performing at school functions, birthday parties, private gatherings, and cultural events such as and lunar new year celebrations. The team has been highlighted numerous times in the San Diego Union Tribune and on local television.
We have been guest performers for many local events and San Diego based businesses: San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Linda Vista Multicultural Parade, San Diego Chinese New Year & Cultural Fair, San Diego Tet Festival, Balboa Theatre, USD Faculty, UCSD Faculty, San Diego Chinese Academy, North County Chinese School, World Trade Center San Diego, Raytheon Corp, Solar Turbines, Illumina, Singapore Malaysian Association of San Diego, Jasmine Seafood Restaurant, and more.
