As a child I grew up as a musician. At the age of three, I started playing the piano by ear. My mother was studying the piano in college and I picked it up from listening to her daily practice. Throughout my childhood I took piano lessons, performed in recitals and won piano competitions. Music was the career that I was destined to pursue.

Even though music was a central focus in my early life, I always had a love of martial arts movies. I watched Saturday morning Kung Fu theater and I would imitate these kung fu warriors by throwing kicks and punches and even injuring myself jumping from couch to couch. In my youth, I simply loved how the movie heroes could perform incredible fighting feats that no one else could. They seemed superhuman to me. This was appealing since I grew up in a bad part of town where young boys where almost expected to fight if they where to prove they where tough.

Finally at the age of ten, my mother put me in a martial arts school where I learned Kenpo Karate for a year. During that time I felt like I was doing exactly what I always wanted to do. I had the white gi, the rank belt, and I was training in class right along with other martial artists. However, after a year of training, my mother could no longer afford paying for lessons, so I discontinued practicing martial arts.

As I later entered college, I still had the idea of becoming a performer in the classical music genre. My plan was to teach music professionally and perform all around the world. I had already started teaching private piano lessons since I was 16 years old.

However, a few violent occurrences arose that made me think back to the martial arts that I loved. Being attacked by a gang of skinheads made me realize the importance of learning self-defense. I vowed that I would learn the skills that I remembered seeing in these kung fu movies as a child. In the meantime, a friend and I started practicing techniques and sparring from books written by Bruce Lee.

I later got a job taking care of an Alzheimer’s patient at her home. Her grandson had a collection of martial arts movies and a punching bag in the back yard. I practiced punches and kicks on the bag and watched these movies with almost the same awe as I did when I was a child. Finally, I met the grandson and learned he was a student of the La Mesa White Dragon School. After he told me that they taught Kung Fu, I immediately went there and was completely impressed on how serious the school looked and felt. I signed up for the introductory course and fell in love with the training. I signed up right away and knew eventually that I wanted to become a teacher.

After a few years of hard work, I was invited to join the instructor’s training group. I knew through my experiences of teaching the piano that I would only be able to maximize my skill in Kung Fu if I taught it as well. After completing the rigorous training and becoming an instructor, my love of the art had become so deep that I knew I wanted to do it as a career. I had the honor to study with La Mesa’s Chief Instructor at the time, Master Nathan Fisher, as well as Tai-Sifu Donald Tittle. Learning from these two high level teachers enriched my experience beyond what I had learned as a student. Several years later, I decided to teach full time and was invited to train as an assistant to the chief instructor. Then in 2003, I was promoted to the title of Chief Instructor of  White Dragon School Encinitas.  A year later I was promoted to the level of Sifu by my teacher and Grandmaster Doc Fai Wong.

Throughout the time I trained as an instructor, I participated in nearly 30 tournaments including the World Tai Chi Chuan Championships in Taiwan, MMA tournaments, form competitions, as well as taking grand champion in the Dragon Cup Instructor’s Tournament. With all of this experience, I felt that my skills had been sharpened in a way that wouldn’t have been possible with out doing these events. I thank all my teachers for pushing me to compete and test myself in these events.

Looking back at my original plan in life, I feel immense gratitude for training here at the White Dragon Martial Arts. The physical and mental conditioning formed my character in a way music alone could not. The past 20 years, martial arts training has given me a clearer perception of life and what is important as a human being. Looking at life through the eyes of a martial artist makes me put importance on family, health, self protection, and longevity in a way that feels very direct and driven. I feel that martial arts teaches us to hone and better ourselves in every aspect of life and to constantly reflect on ourselves. Passing on the lessons and values of my teacher has been a deeply rewarding experience. I consider serving as the Chief Instructor of White Dragon Encinitas to be a great honor.
